Volunteer Tech FAQs
When logging into Teams it asks for a code

Most likely: You are typing your email account wrong. Try it again
Less likely: The internet connection isn’t trusted which means the app won’t trust the log in. If you are sure you are typing the email correctly then uninstall and reinstall the app.

The password is not working
If you input the password incorrectly for 3 times we need to reset it. Ask for help to a member of staff.
I got this message “We’re sorry-we’ve run into an issue”

Click on Restart, double check that you are typing your email correctly
I logged into Teams but I can’t see the Young Pirates’ sessions (I also use Teams for school/work/something else)

If you are using Teams for school/work you may have logged into your school/work account instead
Check the following steps:
1-Click the profile icon on the top right of your screen. It will have your initials or a profile picture.
2-When you click the icon please select sign out.
3- Sign in again using the Literacy Pirates account
I logged into Teams with the @literacypirates.org account but I cannot see the Young Pirates’ sessions
Please follow this workflow. Start from step 1, if there is no improvement move to the following step:
Step 1-Check if your networking speed has gone down with www.fast.com (you need13 Mbps or more). If it has try to switch off other devices that use wi-fi and try closing other programs and windows in your laptop/mac
Step 2-Try to log out and log in again.
Step 3- Ask a member of the staff to check that you have been added to the group.
Step 4-Try to uninstall and install the app again.

When I join the session, Teams crashes and/or kicks me out of the app.
It’s helpful to know if this is a regular occurrence or a one off. Generally, this tends to only happen at the start of the session – when your device is warming up, or when everyone is together in the General room. We would advise you switch on your device at least 15 minutes before joining the session to give it the best start! If it is, however, a recurring issue it might be something to do with your device. Try these steps and let us know how they go:
1-Free up space in your device.
2-Check for device updates.
3-Uninstall and reinstall the Teams app.

I keep dropping out of session/ I cannot see the breakout rooms/ I cannot see the chat/ I can see the call coming through but I cannot join…
It may be a network issue. You can check your network speed at www.fast.com. If it is lower than 13Mbps it can disrupt the functionality of Microsoft Team. If it is higher follow these steps:
- Check for updates on your device and install them.
- Close all other windows and apps when you have Teams open.
- If you have other device using the Wi-Fi switch them off.
I cannot join a call.

Make sure you have selected computer audio to join the call.
If there is no improvement:
Check if Microsoft Teams needs updates.

I cannot see or hear/others cannot see me or hear me
Are you using an external microphone/speaker? or an external camera?
Check if you have set the right settings on Teams.
How to check audio and camera settings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gu3hxfBjWM
After checking your setting you can make a test call to test your audio and camera by clicking on “make a test call” in the settings section.

If you still have issues with the camera or the microphone/speakers check that Microsoft Teams has permission to use the camera and the microphone/speakers:

Check camera and microphone permission on Mac https://youtu.be/JTs5pNsI_ik
My microphone keeps getting muted
It may be that a Young Pirate is muting you. Ask a member of staff to make Young Pirates attendee.
How do I share my screen?
Watch these video on how to share your screen

Some devices, such as a Mac, may block you from screen sharing. Here is how you can allow screen sharing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phit7ZOvtiw
If your Teams freezes or if yours or others’ voices cut out while screen sharing, it may be a network issue. Check your network speed through www.fast.com. If it is lower than 13Mbps it can disrupt the functionality of Microsoft Teams. If it is 13Mbps or higher:
Follow these steps:
- Check for updates on your device and install them.
- Close all other windows and apps when you have Teams open.
- If you have other devices using the Wi-Fi try switching them off.
- Try closing and reopening the app.
