It’s been strange not having our Young Pirates and Volunteer Crewmates under one roof these past few months.
Volunteers play a key role in providing extra adult attention and, for this reason, we’re delighted to share that we’ll be welcoming volunteers aboard again this September, where they will be joining us in our physical and virtual ships.
We’ve been busy preparing for the new academic year and we were delighted to have over 100 volunteers join us for our refresher trainings in July. We went over some key safeguarding reminders, as well as giving tips on how to talk about lockdown and the Black Lives Matter movement with the Young Pirates. We would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you all of the volunteers that stayed in touch – whether it was leaving the Young Pirates messages, donating books by diverse authors, or taking part in our first online pilot – we salute you!

We also want to let everyone know that we’re open for applications! There has never been a better time to volunteer as school closures are likely to have reversed efforts to get children up to speed. Our training sessions have moved online, so if you’re currently out of Hackney or Haringey for whatever reason, don’t worry! We can give you the skills you need from the comfort of your own home. Tell your friends, family, colleagues – anyone you think might be interested in helping children develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance.
