The Literacy Pirates exists to improve the reading, writing, confidence and perseverance of children who are falling behind in school. We work with children whose school teacher thinks they will benefit from our small group support, so they can achieve at school and beyond.

What we do

We work with children aged 9-12 whose teachers think they would benefit from some extra support. Our Young Pirates join us after-school, every week. We run sessions in fantastical spaces in Hackney, Haringey and online.

We believe in the exceptional potential of every child; the power of positivity and fun; and hard work and putting in effort.

Our learning programme is devised and led by experienced teachers. We want children to enjoy reading and provide dedicated time to read with adult volunteers either one to one or in small groups. We want children to share their ideas and offer the chance to write creatively. We publish their written work in high-quality books, films, and audio projects. Each term we celebrate their hard work in big events for friends and family.
